STICK THAT LANDING

If you want to look good while you’re performing tricks on the slopes, you definitely need to stick that landing.  Let’s see if we had that in Thursdays trading…

GOLD – We were looking for a higher high to give us a peak that could make this a right translated daily cycle.  Gold stuck the landing with this break out, and the volume was encouraging.

If Gold continues to stick the landing, it should make it to this target area.

SILVER – Silver stuck the landing too!

An important side-point: At times it takes time to allow the markets to reveal their intentions.

.

You may have noticed in the comments section that certain ones were getting anxious that Gold didn’t Peak beyond day 8 or 9.  “Is it going to be Left Translated?”  I also got emails. I said that I wasn’t worried, I have seen them peak later, even after day 20.

For a visual – I drew this chart, because others kept asking too.  It was becoming the most popular question of the week before yesterday.

The above chart shows that Gold or Miners can go sideways for a while and peak later in a daily cycle too. Often you will not know if a daily cycle is L.T. or R.T. until the cycle completes its journey, and you have to go from there.  On day 17 in the above chart, many possibly were quite worried about this peaking on day 11. Day 18 Popped to new highs and day 25 was even a higher high.  Sometimes it takes time and patience. This is the case with the MINERS right now, as you will see.

 .

USD – I had been saying that I expected the USD to roll over in this area , and that would allow Gold to break out higher. So far, so good.

And then we had the Miners

.

GDX – Oh, sorry – wrong chart

GDX – Well, GDX did not stick the landing .  Miners gapped open and sold off right into the close. Remember my words above, sometimes it takes time for the markets to reveal their real intentions, but it does leave us with questions.

Is it likely that GOLD & SILVER will break out and keep running, with the USD dropping down, and Miners will not follow?  Not likely, but sometimes it takes time to allow the markets, or in this case, the miners, to reveal what they are going to do under the current conditions.

GDX –  This chart from 2 days ago was pointing out what I wanted to see yesterday  (I forgot to put it in the report).  I want to see a break above the upper trend line, and I would expect that we would see that if GOLD & SILVER continue higher, and the USD continues to drop into a Daily Cycle Low.

All I can say at this point is that GOLD, SILVER, and THE USD are all acting as I have been expecting them to.   It is up to the Miners to show us what they intend to do going forward.  Let’s see what Friday brings.  Hopefully they make the jump to the bullish side and can stick that landing Friday.  Stay Frosty and just make sure that you protect your positions if the Miners continue to flop around.

.

Enjoy your Friday trading and your weekend!

~ALEX

.

I had been expecting NAK to drop to the 200sma, and I was going to try buying it there.  Yesterdays new Popped NAK up 30% at the open.  I took a starter position at $1.60 and will add to that if we do see the tag of the 200sma.  It may or may not drop there now, but that should be support if it does. I will have a stop under the 200 loosely.

Did anyone see  CLF, FCX, HBM, X, AKS, VALE, CENX, etc lately??  They just seemed to drop pretty big and for no apparent reason.

I was thinking of recommending this, but I just cant recommend it now, with CLF, FCX, HBM, X, AKS, etc all diving down.  I also sold mine last week. IF you still own it, you may want to look at the others and cut it loose until this sector stabilizes.

Thx Alex I am just blown away we didn’t even come close to last weeks high in gdx. My feeling is this is beyond weak and makes me nervous. My lotto calls should have done well and will be a zero but Thankfully I really have no leverage and tons of dry powder or I would be really frustrated. Hopefully the spark lights today and we get that 4-5 percent push when market open 🙂 ty for the continued excellence every day!

It looks like a bull flag to me in GDX, GDXJ.
Could be a buy a the dip gift and not something to worry about. As I wrote in the report, GOLD, SILVER, and the USD are acting exactly as expected, so I do not see Miners staying here if they continue to act correctly.

That said, I’d like to see a 20% JNUG day today going into the weekend 🙂

I mentioned Sessions several days ago. My belief is that Trump will do favors for his people. I have never used MJ, but it is likely safer than booz and cigs. The establishment, especially Sessions, and many older folks don’t like MJ. The MJ haters are now in power, so IMHO trading MJ stocks will be very tricky. I live in LV and we voted in rec MJ. CO is huge into it. Again, IMHO, this could become Trump’s Achilles heel. Let’s hope the Trump folks don’t hate gold stocks. 🙂

I looked at the MJ stocks I watch on TC2000. Not many show early prices, but so far it does not look like a blood bath, but we’ll see. I hope you will be okay.

I saw the press conference. He was making a clear distinction between legalized medical and legalized recreation, saying that they do see the benefits of medicinal marijuana. At the same time, due to increased opioid addiction and other ongoing drug problems, Federal Law could act to overrule states that legalized recreational MJ. That news could hurt the MJ stocks, maybe not the medicinal ones? Maybe all of them would take an initial hit.

Hard to say…many marijuanas were down yesterday, I took profits on several that I didn’t like the way they were acting – these have all been short term for me anyway…..I won’t hold many very long until we know what’s what…. Hey Catbird – I did mention it recently and I even bought it ( This is the 3rd time I bought it and it stopped me out).

It looked like a long base between 70ish cents and the 90’s, and it ran up and bull flagged, but then they announced work stopping at one of their mines and it dropped, and now continues to drop on fairly heavy volume. I wouldn’t buy it as an opportunity at this point. It looks troubled.

I just checked my records. I bought it at 80 cents when it crossed the 50sma, rode it up to 92 cents where it bull flagged, and I sold it on the gap down at 79 cents. 3rd loss in a row on this one for me.

Despite the pop in gold, miners are a “sell” (down trend) on my 15 min charts this morning, and I have “signal trade” candles with long tails down to yesterday’s close. So don’t be surprised if the “Boyz” push miners down today so that they can jump on the miner train. If you are planning to buy/add miners today, be patient and watch for a dip near yesterday’s close. Just my two cents. And to be clear, I’m still pretty much “all in” on miners and holding, but looking to add a bit more. Good trading to all!

I bot the dip this morning to add more JNUG to my accounts. Those long tail “signal trades” hit like clockwork. Coincidence? You be the judge.

  9. Steve Tytler
    Steve Tytler says:

Some people ask why I use 15 min charts if I’m a long term swing trader. Today is a perfect example. I wanted to add to my JNUG because I think it “bottomed” on Wednesday at $9.98. So I use my 15 min chart for a good entry point. If you were just watching the pop in gold this morning, you might be tempted to buy miners at the open. But my 15 min charts told me that miners would DROP at the open, and most likely retest yesterday’s closing price. So I watched and waited, and sure enough JNUG dropped to a LOD (so far) of $11.10, two cents below yesterday’s close. I then watched my 3 min and 5 min charts for signs of a reversal. Once I saw that price was starting to go back up again, I bot around $11.18 to $11.24 in my accounts. But it ain’t over yet. Miners are still a “sell” (down trend) on my 15 min chart, so they may continue dropping today. But I’m betting the LOD is in. So that’s an example of how and why I use short-term charts for long-term trades. BTW I am NOT a “stock guru” Alex is the expert! I’m just posting what I do because some people here have asked for an explanation.

I also am conservative and patient…realistically, the admin. has way too much on their plate to fuss with cracking down on this for now, plus it would have blowback. I’m hoping this will not be at the top of the priority list for the govt…..I don’t think marijuana was one of the things Trump used in his platform when running for President – so maybe he’ll stick to going after those things he touched on when he was in the running – and also see the potential tax advantages, new job creations, medical innovations, etc. that can come along with this new sector….I’m hoping the slam down on Friday was just a knee jerk reaction and that some will go back up at the beginning of the week….my best trading in these has happened Monday through Weds. the past 2 weeks…..definitely some I will be jumping back into on Monday if it looks like things are looking right –

Hi ChartApprentice! It was early spring and I was driving to work [mural painting for George and Nancy Jones] and I came around a curve around a hillside…and out of the corner of my eye a flash of yellow caught my attention. Still planning on holding my “core”. Everyone else? But we’re late in gold’s cycle, possible it pops to its final 2nd DCL high which is why miners aren’t following. I’m in too heavy to walk this down into a DCL.

        Steve Tytler says:

I do not like to publicly post when I sell anything because I don’t want to scare anyone out of their positions. All I will say is that miners are a “sell” (down trend) on my daily charts and I’ve been ignoring that signal in favor of my weekly charts, which are still bullish. The fact that the GDX:GLD ratio has been dropping steadily for more than two weeks and we have had two trading days (including today) that looked very promising at the open but sold off during the day is not a good sign. Everyone has to make their own trades. I post “buying opps” when I see them but it’s up to everyone to have their own exit strategy, set your own stops and know your own risk level. As of right NOW I have not sold any of my miner positions … but that does not necessarily mean I will hold everything over the weekend. Again, check your own charts and make your own trading decisions. Follow Alex’s advice … that’s why you are here.

            Steve Tytler says:

Hey Cason, I hope you didn’t take my post the wrong way. I was merely trying to say that I make it a point NOT to post when I sell something because I’m a afraid somebody else might follow me and then they will be upset if/when miners (or whatever) take off without them. I used to get scared out of my positions in the past by following other “stock gurus” and letting posts in forums freak me out. Now I try to tune that stuff out and I don’t want to add to the problem by posting my own sell trades. I sometimes post when I BUY because I think that is more useful information to alert others to potential opportunities that they can check out on their own charts. Selling is a much more personal thing because some people are day traders, some hold for months, and everything in between. So everyone has their own risk tolerance levels.

Not alarmist and not emotional (and yes I sure have been in the past, sorry), but factually saw a few red flags and removed leverage late in a cycle going into a weekend. That makes sense. 2) I’ll take an Alex trade and he assumes that no one goobered up their stop. As it starts to tank, we’ll find out he’s been out for weeks b/c no one posts their sells. Folks, I gotta tell you miners look BAD right now! They are a strong “sell” on my 15 min chart, which means they are likely to keep selling off into the close, unless there is a massive rush of BTFD guys reversing the price trend at EOD. Yikes! Make your own trading decisions.

10 year 2.32 money going into treasuries – early selling to get out of main equities. Probably cracks will show more between now and mid March there.
We might go up next week as people are feeling sooo down . . . we will know soon.

Closed out all miners today (sad day) finished green in almost all, but that green was literally scraping the bottom of the barrels after being up pretty big jsut a week or so ago.. Jumped heavily into USLV on the 22nd, so thats bee a solid pick me up… really disappointed with Miners right now..

me too…just finished last selling. May go up next week but I’ll wait to see. weekly on many just barely above 10dma, RSI never really got above 60 and so far weekly high at week 8…happy to be fooled if there’s a next leg up (I’ll get on it then) but if not, it’s a long way down from here and I ain’t giving up all my gains.

Yeah, GLD kept me in the fight. I still want to be long here but went from big profit in JNUG to little profit and I just wasn’t willing to risk it. I’ll be back next week!

Feels like the set up may be higher dollar. Emerging markets, oil sector, miners all heading lower today like they see it coming. Time will tell.

I lowered exposure significantly but still holding core and a few choice losers.

Thank goodness for my GLD calls. They saved my butt this week! Cause my MJ plays went up in smoke today, too!

      Comex commercial shorts at 243,000.
End of Feb last year they were 284,000
In a May last year they got over 400,000

Plenty of upside room for $gold price yet IMO

OWCP was remarkable on the MJ medical side, today. So much snow closed Little Cottonwood Canyon all day except for a brief window from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Tough to not use pre-puchased ticket, but sold my position on the drop of -4% and repurchased seeing it strengthen at 11:00 and close up 11.53%. It is one of our giraffes that has not slowed—–YET.

Hedge funds maybe be buying physical first so why miners limping along.
Hearing large buys hard to come by with huge premiums.

For those following the marijuana issue – there are some 5 or 6 “acts” that have yet to be brought to vote on in Congress…..Marijuana Businesses Access to Banking of 2015, Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2015, Medical Marijuana Research Act of 2016, Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act, CARERS Act, Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2015 – some of these are trying to get the classification of marijuana changed, some trying to say that states rights should be honored, etc. – the one that the govt. is currently operating under is the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment – which is a rider to the federal spending bill – and it prohibits the U.S. DOJ from using congressionally allocated funds to prevent states from implementing their own laws that authorize the use, distribution, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana…..there was a case that came up that showed this provision specifically restricts the DOJ from spending money to prosecute individuals who are in full compliance with the medical marijuana laws in the states where they operate. This bill has to be renewed every year- last year there was bipartisan support throughout the legislature and so the amendment survived reauthorization last year. From what I read it seems as if it would be supported again this year when it comes up – this doesn’t seem to address the issue of recreational marijuana, but since some states have voted it in then maybe they are thinking the govt. will leave them alone and let them have the final say on their own laws….? .. ..just thought I’d toss this out for information….

For those interested in the MM sector – here is a link to various responses from companies and organizations to the White House press secretary statement on Thursday –

    http://mjinews.com/industry-responses-to-trump-administrations-stance-on-cannabis/

If you read the one toward the bottom – Representative Polis of Colorado….he states that the President has stated time and again that the marijuana decision should be left to the states and wonders if either the President has flip flopped or if his staff is just speaking out of turn. So I’m wondering if we’ll hear from Trump on it soon as I’m sure the White House is being bombarded by questions from various groups wanting clarification….IF he comes out and states yes it should be left in the hands of the states……that would be a good day for the stocks I would imagine – and vice versa maybe if he states the opposite…..so…..guess we’ll see…..ok, last post on marijuana for the weekend I promise – I know most of you are following gold and not the marijuanas 🙂
