I Believe That They Are Ready

When I am preparing food on the grill, I’m checking the temperature, watching for grill marks, looking for a change in color, and several other signs to know when the food is ready.  In a similar manner, we have been watching various aspects of the precious metals markets and also looking for a variety of signs indicating when they may be ready for consumption.     🙂

.

How do things look?  Lets take a look…

.

USD – I’ve been waiting for the USD to start dipping down and sell off into a daily cycle low  (DCL). we are well within the timing for the dollar to drop.

usd-10-17

WTIC –  This is playing out as I expected so far.  Please read the chart.

wtic-10-17

XLE – As expected from my Oct 10th chart, this is a bearish rising wedge.

xle-10-10

xle-10-17

.

GOLD – From the weekend report, Day 30 or day 5th. We needed a break above $1267.69 and a close above the 10sma to make us happy…

gold-10-14

GOLD –  We did NOT get either. These are your parameters to watch, but I think we are ready for an upside break out. Watch that $1267.60 , it can be considered a BUY or ADD more signal.  If we got a  break down, that would be on Day 32, and that is late for a daily cycle.  That means that it would most likely be a false break down and a reversal.  This is Bullish either way now.

gold-10-17

GOLD – GOLD & SILVER are both pushed right against the 10sma. A break above it ( Preferably a close above) is Bullish confirmation.

gold-10-17b

SILVER – No confirmation on Monday, but a move higher puts silver above the 10sma  ( Not shown, that is the 10ema).

silver-10-17

GDX : GOLD  FROM THE WEEKEND.  I mentioned that Miners are leading and that is usually bullish, so I asked,  “Will this break down or back test?”

gdx-gold-10-14

MINERS moved this higher while Gold was slightly green, so GDX:GOLD looked like a break out & back test. Notice the MACD.

gdx-gold-10-17

GDX –  This looks like day 4, as MINERS closed above the 10sma ( 8sma shown).  Miners often lead the move higher and they are oversold.

gdx-10-17

SO…

Miners often lead the move and that leads me to the title of this report. ‘I believe that they are ready.‘  I have been pointing out 1 feature after another in recent reports of areas of interest in the precious metals sector (  my personal ‘Buy’ trigger,  GDX:GOLD, CYCLE COUNTS, SENTIMENT, The COT, ETC. ETC.) , and at this point they are all adding up to a low being very close or already in place.

Think about this:  When you plant a garden, you lay down a number of seeds and wait. And while watering, watching, and waiting, you are looking for signs of success.  You look for some ‘sprouts’ to start popping up to prove that your garden has what it takes to grow.  Isn’t it true though, that only after you see a few sprouts begin to surface,  you really begin to feel better about your prospects of having a  productive garden down the road?

.

SO are we seeing some sprouts in our garden of miners, to give us hope of good things to come? In other words, are any Miners growing above their 10sma, breaking higher, and maybe leading the way, showing that the soil may be right for others to follow? Lets review.

.

HL – Nice break above the 10sma Monday, up almost 7%.

hl-10-17

TAHO – Another POP & Close above the 10sma.  Also at this time, we see the MACD about to cross bullishly. This is still at the lows, this could be bought here with a stop reasonably below the lows.

taho-10-17b

EXK – Closed above the 10 sma, STILL AT THE LOWS,  a low risk buy.

exk-10-17

TGD – This one broke the 10sma last Wednesday, and the MACD has already performed a bullish cross over ( below the zero line). A mini bull flag may be preparing for a break out here.

tgd-10-17

GDV – Also broke above the 10sma and has a MACD cross above the zero line. This actually moved from roughly  $2 to $2.70 in the last 7 days without many noticing. That is 30% in about a week, and nobody cares.

gsv-10-17

.

So we are seeing a good sign of confirmation of a low now in GDX, GDXJ, and SILVER, and Gold will likely follow now.  Even a quick break down in Gold would reverse very quickly, so things are now Bullish the way I see things.  We also see several Miners are breaking above their 10sma while GOLD lingers at the lows.  It is now easier to recommend buying with a stop below the recent lows. The risk reward is largely in favor of upside, especially if we are forming an ICL.  Look back at May ICL. The upside for the following 2 months gave Miners gains from 50% to 250%+.  If you have been at chartfreak for a while, you remember our gains in VGZ ( 200%), MUX ( 100%+),  and TRX ( 200+%).  We did NOT lock gains in at the very top, so yes, we gave some back, but my point is that we are at the lows or very close to the lows, and even 20%, 40%, 60% gains would be excellent gains compared to the downside risk. Cycle timing says that any downside would reverse quickly.

.

Look at the charts of HL, EXK, and TAHO in the report above.  DO they look toppy?  Or oversold and like they are just getting started? I see many Miners oversold, right at the lows, and they have  MACD divergence.  I think they are ready. In my opinion, to avoid individual risk, you need a basket of at least 4 or5 Miners in case one sells off,  use options, or you should trade the ETFs. Depending on what we see Tuesday, I may have some charts of set ups in the next report. If you own nothing in Miners, why not take a small position and add as we go if this analyses proves to be correct? 🙂  Happy Tuesday.

.

.

I had some charts of Miners setting up in some of last weeks reports. Why not go back and see a few of those ?

Hi Alex. First off… excellent and insightful analysis as always and always so well balanced, which I especially appreciate. Reading through your comments as always and looking at my charts, especially intra-day ones, one thing keeps jumping out at me and it’s that gold and silver in particular look like they could still be in some kind of minor 4th wave triangle. IF…IF that is the case it would call for one more and potentially short, sharp thrust to the downside to complete a minor wave 5 and in turn a much larger correction sequence. I’m also seeing this on a number of indivudual miner charts BUT NOT ALL. As you so correctly point out some are showing clear signs of breaking higher and leading the next bull move. But just wanted to say that IF..IF..we did see one more short term thrust lower, IMHO it fits perfectly with one of the two possible scenarios you have described above and for any that have already adopted positions not to be ‘thrown’ by one more spike down IF we get it but to just hang tough for a day or two and not miss the ride back up. I know how tough it can be fighting our emotions and they’ll potentially be screaming one thing if we make one final break lower when we should be doing the exact opposite!! Just hope those thoughts might be of interest to at least some!

      Bill says:

Looking at premarket pricing on the leveraged miners, I’d say we are going to go much higher today. This could be, could be (IMHO) the blast off day.

    • chartfreak1
      chartfreak1 says:

I agree Chris – I see the same thing, some look like maybe a truncated 5 and down to the downside, others need to complete and it could be a shake out move, or maybe they truncate. Either way, cycle timing says that it would be a shake out and not a deep run lower in my opinion.

      • Chris
        Chris says:

That’s the key point Alex as you’ve pointed out a number of times already. 🙂 Definitely need to keep that in mind if we did see one more spike down in the very short term. It’s always so easy doing this in real time!! So much easier than with the benefit of hindsight!! Lol

I did this report last night at 10 p.m. and as I was searching through the ‘grilling pictures’, I got REALLY hungry.

pictures were even better looking, but I was trying to find a pic with
enough veggies, in case any readers are vegetarian. I didnt want them

Thanks Alex (i am vegetarian and i like your idea of including veg in the grill.)
many times i wonder, how you are getting the picture perfect “Titles” with relevant image. Really it is not usual market update or recommendation like any other news letter in the market.

Day by day you are really spending lot of effort to make it work and do wonders. I am really everyday enjoying the intutive knowledge and the way you investigate dcl/icl – waiting for many parameters and step-by-step assessment.

I really impressed your take on miners in the recent time (i had NUGT/JNUG bought week ago) don’t want to miss this game.

Also, earlier you nailed the oil bottom… exceptionally good … never … ever forget so easily.

Very kind of you, I appreciate your positive & kind feedback. So glad when people here are making money . THIS was a long patient waiting period for Miners, today is good.

Also I really do try to put some additional thought into the pictures.
Veggies on the grill are great part of my summer meals : )

( I love animals a ton, But somehow the steak tips also take up a lot of room on the grill ).

      chartfreak1 says:

I’m OK with this, being as late as we are in the daily cycle. This could drop fast and try to shake the longs out.

AND THEN MAYBE , you might get a lot of people going short…

AND THEN MAYBE WE get the short covering sometime this week and the rocket launch that you are looking for .

      • Glmus
        Glmus says:

Both EWT and Gann would like to see a quick drop too. Patience may be the byword. We have waited this long, so what is another few days.

        • chartfreak1
          chartfreak1 says:

For me, Miners are leading and even resisting todays sharp sell off. I dont know if they are waiting for a drop in EWT and GANN only in the Metals or in Miners too, but I got a buy signal in Miners last week using a system that I developed over the yrs, and honestly, it is scary accurate.

That said, you are correct for the conservative ones. Waiting a bit more would not hurt. If this is an ICL, there will be 2 months of upside at least, like the rally in May. You will have time to enter in E.W. on the 2 of the 1-2-3-4-5

          • Rob
            Rob says:

Do you think it will be as relentless as Mays? That rally seemed like it would never end a month – 6 weeks in. It was amazing at times.

          • chartfreak1
            chartfreak1 says:

If this is an ICL, it should make good ground once the shorts start to cover, then we’ll have to see where it runs to. I do have a few ideas, and it is always better for the miners than the metals. Gold can move 200 higher, so Miners can do very well.

  2. Glmus
    Glmus says:

I know that it is early, but this does not feel like a blast off to me. JNUG is up about 4%, but I would think that it would be up 10% by now. I see where Mick just posted a similar note. My 20% position is up 1%.

  3. chartfreak1
    chartfreak1 says:

Did anyone just see GOLD PLUNGE : )

I think they are trying to shake us out of our positions, but honestly, they are putting things on sale if the miners drop.

  5. Glmus
    Glmus says:

Alex, an opinion please. It seems to me that often they run golds up in the first hour, then hammer them. So I am often loathe to buy the first hour. In this case, this start is very muted. Are they using reverse psychology on us today? I assume that you will sniff this out during the day.

    • chartfreak1
      chartfreak1 says:

It is tough to know, but because I saw GOLD slam down, and Miners are just barley doing a gap fill, it gives me personally more confidence that most of the sellers are out now.

If buyers start buying, and shorts cover, that is when it gets really fun

      • Glmus
        Glmus says:

    Hi Alex,
what’s your thought on IVN – Ivanhoe mines / Canadian – this one did almost no pullback at all – close to 52 weeks high

    • chartfreak1
      chartfreak1 says:

Well, I love the fact that it hardly pulled back, that shows that it is strong.
The question is upside potential. The weekly charts shows that it can just keep moving higher, the daily may be a tad extended, but overall

You have to give it an A+ for not pulling back in the sell off.

  8. chartfreak1
    chartfreak1 says:

I’m watching Miners act correctly here all morning. In my opinion, the selling is done, the sellers are gone . After Golds slam down this a.m., the sellers were no longer there to bail out of their positions and drop prices.

I think that the lows in Miners are in place. Some are still at lows and should be bought on any signs of strength in my opinion.

AG is just now starting to cross the 10sma out of a flat base too. yes, it has been lackluster, but this & many others could easily double if this is an ICL.

        Hey Shermo,

yes, so far so good. Things were looking like they could break down and that we’d be seeing a bear flag, but this morning , while Gold gets slammed down after the open, Miners take off higher. What a game , what a game.

  9. Glmus
    Glmus says:

The quiet is deafening. JNUG is up 10%, a good sign, and I am up 2.4%. My guaranteed late system has weekly buys on GSV (though down a little), HL, and AGI. Can we agree yet that Alex has nailed it?

      • chartfreak1
        chartfreak1 says:

        ” add today?”

It depends on your trading style. I began adding last week, and am all in and then some now.
We are breaking above the 10sma and volumes are beginning to increase ( Short cover & Buying).
We are seeing Miners up 7-15% , and it has been a while since we saw that.

Sidenote: I also owned GPL, and even though it should move higher, I sold it and added funds to TRX on the pullback.
That pullback in TRX is normal.

I don’t like the low volume, and I would expect that tomorrows should increase .

Interestingly, Gold STILL hasn’t put a swing low in place, yet Miners look pretty good.

MAYBE gold dips to an undercut low, and Miners pull back but hold the lows, then the real volume comes in. Tough to know.

Same here. funny, get one up day and are like “where do I sell?”. So, IF we are in a bull AND and this is an ICL, we should see GDX to new highs. Resistance at precious highs nearound $31. Also time based, could get 2 week run, move higher and then a drop to 1st DCL. I’d like to see a move to $31, pause, flag back 38% (27-28 area) and then make another run to new highs. That would be cool. But never seems to follow my plan 😛

      • Crystal

The time based makes sense … it’s about two weeks until the next fed meeting /they meet Nov 1 and 2.
